Goals from set-pieces sink Albion

Match Report kindly supplied by: Andrew Simpson, Senior Sports Writer, Mid-Cheshire Guardian series -

WITTON Albion suffered another away defeat, their fourth from six road trips this season, after conceding identical goals on Tuesday.
Bailey Gooda and James Walshaw were both in the right position to bury a loose ball after their guests failed to clear from a corner swung in from the left.

It leaves Carl Macauley’s men, who brushed aside North Ferriby United last weekend, in the Northern Premier League Premier Division table’s bottom-half.

They might have taken the lead inside 60 seconds, but Boro goalkeeper Tom Taylor tipped over Will Jones’ header from Danny McKenna’s cross.

The hosts soon rallied, and Michael Coulson’s driven attempt from a free-kick rattled an upright after taking a deflection.

A breakthrough arrived five minutes after the interval when Gooda thumped an unstoppable shot into the net from close-range.

It settled the Seadogs, and Coulson directed a header wide of the far post after Luke Dean picked him out.

They doubled their lead on 71 minutes, Walshaw hooking in a left-footed effort after Albion custodian Greg Hall steered a flag-kick into his path.

It jolted Witton, who sent on Delial Brewster, replacing belated debutant Will Booth, to support Rob Hopley and Jones in attack.
Hopley was unlucky to see a clever flick with his heel flash wide after Brewster had bustled away from Dave Merris.

Former Albion midfielder Nathan Valentine then stretched fully to divert Matty Devine’s cross to safety with Hopley appearing certain to apply a finishing touch.

River Humphreys couldn’t direct substitute Anthony Gardner’s long throw on target before Devine volleyed high when well-placed after Billy Smart had nudged the ball his way.
