Unbeaten streak away from continues

Witton Albion walked away with a very good point from Grantham despite the last-minute goal from the hosts Rhys Lewis.

Carl Macauley said to the Northwich Guardian’s Andrew Simpson last week, “we’ll go toe-to-toe with them,” and we certainly did. The Albion had the better chances of the game and the pressure put on by Witton started off with a cross from Steven Tames that couldn’t find it’s target.

It was a fairly even battle in the game with both sides having longish patches of dominance but Witton had the better chances throughout the whole of the game.

In the 13th minute, Tom Owens had a side-footed effort hit wide after a previous shot was parried out towards Owens. More good play game after the quarter of an hour mark when some quick inter-play broke Foley free and his intercepted pass couldn’t find its way to Steven Tames for a 1v1 effort. The Albion went into the half-time interval looking like the more dangerous side but couldn’t make their first half efforts count.

The 2nd half started slower than expected as many passes aimed forward were loose and were constantly intercepted by either side.
The 58th minute saw James Foley send a wonderful pass over to Owen Dale who controlled it superbly but sent his left-footed shot wide of the far post. From that, Grantham had several chances on goal and looked like the more likely side to open the scoring.
The 76th minute arrived when a Danny McKenna free kick was met by the head of Rob Hopley and his nodded down pass was volleyed in by Steven Tames who had all the time in the world to put The Albion in front.

The Gingerbreads responded well after their goal and were buoyed by the ever-present support of the Grantham faithful. For now, Witton kept them at arms length with Calvin Hare making some superb saves in a short space of time.
In the 88th minute, a hard hit volley from James Foley was headed off the line and The Albion were unfortunate not to double their lead late on. Grantham went up the other end and after a game of ping-pong inside Witton’s box, the ball eventually fell to Rhys Lewis who poked the ball home to send the Grantham fans into mayhem.

A point at second-placed Grantham is still a very good point and we look to continue our unbeaten away form into our trip to Matlock Town on the 17th February, however between now and then we face Stourbridge at home.
