Lee Hughes' late winner gives Albion first home league loss of 2018

Former West Bromwich Albion striker, Lee Hughes, capitalises on Michael Wilson's mistake to give Halesowen the three points to help them in their survival bid.

Despite a disappointing home loss to second bottom-placed Halesowen, The Albion's promotion bid has been done no harm as rivals, Ashton United and Shaw Lane both lost away game to Rushall Olympic and Altrincham respectively. The Albion started the game on form, looking to put the defeat at Hurst Cross on Saturday behind them as several quick, incisive moves were made to put Witton players into dangerous positions.

In the 2nd minute, Steve Tames put in a dangerous cross from the right side, aimed towards Rob Hopley who couldn't get onto the end of it and somehow, neither did anyone else. Witton had a spell early on of playing several one-twos in and around the box and Tom Owens carried this pattern on, resulting in winning a corner.

More chances were created in the 13th minute when a corner headed out, fell to Prince Haywood who's driven shot deflected off the foot of Will Jones resulting in a goal-kick.

The early pressure put on by The Albion eventually broke Halesowen's rigid defensive line when Steve Tames' driven pass found Rob Hopley on the edge of the 6-yard box, who poked the ball home in the 17th minute.

Witton took their foot off the gas and Halesowen sensed the lack of intensity creating several opportunities and forcing Calvin Hare into making an incredible double save. Witton's passing at this point was poor and the intensity dropped by the load.

In the 27th minute, Kevin Deveiga-Montario drilled the ball into the box and Nick Ryan unfortunately sent the ball into his own net to send Halesowen level. Witton again trying to find the goal to put them ahead, Matty Devine skipped past a couple of the Yeltz's midfielders and released a shot from the left channel, just scraping past the far post.

The rest of the first half would wonder away with no real chances being created and Halesowen defending very well keeping a tight middle four.

Witton again started the second half well with Will Jones winning a penalty in the 55th minute and Steve Tames converting from the spot, sending the keeper, Daniel Platt, the wrong way.

Once again the tempo dropped from The Albion and were eventually punished when Lee Hughes drifted past Michael Wilson and his well hit shot hit the bar, only for Ali Ahmed to smash away. Witton were only left with one quarter of an hour to find a winner, yet it was Halesowen who found the winning goal in the 91st minute when Michael Wilson sent a back header without enough power only for ex-pro, Lee Hughes to shoot away under Calvin Hare giving the Yeltz a very well-earned three points.

Next up The Albion play host to Hednesford Town as we look to get back to winning ways.
