Saunders strike gives Witton share of the spoils

A Callum Saunders second half goal was enough to ensure that Witton Albion picked up a point from a toughly contested encounter against Gainsborough Trinity at the U Lock It Stadium.

Albion were behind after a first half header by Jovon Makama had given the visitors the lead.

New signing Ben Pleavin made his Witton debut after joining on loan from Accrington Stanley, while fellow recent addition Josh Agbozo made his first start after a sub appearance in the last outing versus Warrington Town.

It was a strong start by Witton, Will Jones having a header expertly saved by Yates in the Trinity goal before the custodian had to deal with a number of dangerous in swinging corners by James Foley.

But it was the visitors who would break the deadlock, Makama rising the highest to nod home a right wing free kick on 19 minutes.

Witton looked for an equaliser before the break but Saunders was denied by another good stop from Yates as Gainsborough went in a goal to the good at half time.

Danny McKenna was introduced at half time, before Tom Owens and Rob Hopley also came off the bench just 10 minutes into the second period, manager Carl Macauley showing attacking intent and playing his hand early.

It got its reward, as soon after, Witton drew level.

After great work down the right from Joe Ferguson, the Blackburn loanee sent over a perfect cross to the back post where Saunders was on hand to provide the finishing touch.

McKenna, Owens and Hopley all have Witton a dangerous threat to the away defence and further chances fell for Foley and Owens to try to give Albion a lead.

But despite second half domination, it wasn’t quite to be as Trinity held out for a draw from a game played in tricky conditions.
