After beating league leaders away from home on Saturday, Albion couldn't quite follow it up with a result at the team in South Shields' pursuit despite a good performance.

It was a relatively tight first 45 minutes with chances falling to both teams. Witton's full backs James Short and Isaac Baldwin had efforts for the visitors while the hosts brought a couple of excellent saves out of Chris Renshaw, while Josh Wardle also cleared a shot off the line.

James Foley went close with a free kick shortly after the restart, before fresh legs were introduced in the form of Tom Owens and Kyle Sambor.

Renshaw made another fantastic save to deny Callum Chettle an almost certain goal before the home side took the lead on 62 minutes.

A free kick was whipped in between goalkeeper and defence and Kane Richards nipped in and headed home from close range.

Substitute Sambor fired over the crossbar as Albion looked to respond as they did at the weekend.

Danny Mitchley was introduced to increase the attacking threat further as Witton pressed for an equaliser.

Short forced a good save from the Basford goalkeeper with a stinging effort from the edge of the area while Adam Anson fired off target following a well worked free kick.

Cesaire Lingouba had the final effort of the game, his low shot going wide of the target as Witton couldn't quite emulate their heroics of two days previous.
