10-man Buxton beat Albion

Witton Albion fell to a disappointing defeat at the hands of 10-man Buxton at Wincham Park.

Two goals on the counter attack were the undoing of Albion who were unable to make the most of their man advantage in the second half.

It was a poor first 45 minutes with neither side creating too much in terms of goalmouth activity.

Danny Mitchley firing across the face of the goal was the best that Witton could muster, while the visitors had a Tom Elliott shot saved by Chris Renshaw before Kristian Scott fired wide in the last opportunity of the first period.

As the half ended, Buxton were reduced to 10 men. Alex Byrne was shown a second yellow card after a challenge on Josh Wardle.

Witton made a bold double change at the beginning of the second half. Will Jones and MJ Monaghan were introduced to replace Cesaire Lingouba and Billy Smart with Albion looking to attack their opposition.

Albion's best chance of the game fell on 65 minutes when James Short's excellent low cross was met by Danny Mitchley whose first time effort at the near post was met by a superb reaction save by the Buxton goalkeeper.

From the resulting corner, it was the visitors who would open the scoring. The set piece was poor and easily cleared allowing Buxton to break at pace with Tom Elliott steering the ball home from close range.

Tom Owens and MJ Monaghan forced good saves from Grant Shenton in the Buxton goal as Albion pressed for an equaliser, but it was the visitors who would double their lead and confirm their victor in the final minute.

Another quick counter saw the ball worked to Liam Hardy who turned past his marker before sliding the ball under Renshaw.

A day to forget for Carl Macauley's side, who move on to a trip to Gainsborough Trinity next weekend.
