Witton Albion suffered a 3-1 away defeat to Ashton United in the BetVictor Northern Premier League.
The visitors began the game strongly and took the lead on eight minutes. Will Jones and Billy Smart helped the ball on to Tom Owens who volleyed home neatly from 12 yards to put Albion a goal to the good.
However, in helping the team break the deadlock, Jones suffered a serious injury. He went straight to hospotal and we have learned that he has a double fracture of the jaw which will require surgery. We, of course, wish Will well with his recovery.
It was a stop-start affair for much of the remainder of the first half with the home side coming into it a bit more as it drew to its climax, and they drew level on the stroke of half time.
Former Albion striker Steven Tames was the man who did the damage, netting from close range following a corner kick to send the teams in at the break level pegging.
Ashton took the lead on the hour mark. A free kick was swung into the danger area, and after a couple of home players had flicked the ball on, Michael Brewster made the final touch to poke home from close range.
United made it 3-1 midway through the second half via the penalty spot. Louis Almond was brought down inside the box, giving Josh Wilson the opportunity from 12 yards and he took it, sending Chris Renshaw the wrong way.
Albion kept battling to get back into the game, but it wasn't to be and the hosts held on to claim three points.
Witton are next in charge next Saturday afternoon, on the road once more with a trip to Matlock Town, kick-off 3:00pm.
