Sambor, McKenna and Owens on target as Albs defeat the Gingerbreads

Witton Albion continued their recent good form with another home victory at Wincham Park, beating Grantham Town 3-1.

James Short dropped to the bench to be replaced by Cesaire Lingouba in manager Carl Macauley's solitary change to the starting XI which played at Hyde United last weekend.

It was an entertaining opening to the game with good chances for early goals.

The first opportunity fell to Liam Goulding who received a left wing corner on the edge of the penalty area which he flicked up and volleyd but his effort flew over the bar.

Will Jones was next in line to test the Grantham backline. The striker received a forward pass on his left side and saw a powerful effort well saved by Adnan Kanuric in the visitors' goal.

The away side then had a chance of their own, this time from a set play. Craig Westcarr took a free-kick from 25 yards which went up and over the wall before brushing the top of the crossbar on its way out of play.

Goulding had a further chance to break the deadlock for the hosts but he dragged a shot wide after good build up play down the left.

The deadlock was broken on 12 minutes and it went the way of the away team. Brad McGowan got his head to a cross to send the ball towards goal, but a decisive deflection off a defender wrong-footed Chris Renshaw with the ball ending in the back of the net.

Renshaw was called into action a minute later to deny Michael Tweed before Albion restored parity.

A lovely move down the right hand side resulted in Cesaire Lingouba sending in a low cross which was met perfectly at the near post by Kyle Sambor who fired home past Kanuric.

Sambor then had a header cleared off the line, while an effort by Tom Owens was scrambled away as Witton looked the most likely to extend the scoring.

And they did just that on the half-hour mark through Danny McKenna. Sambor did well on the left and cut the ball back to McKenna to slam the ball home from 12 yards.

An entertaining first half ended with a Grantham penalty after Josh Wardle had brought down Remaye Campbell.

Westcarr stepped up but his low strike was parried by Renshaw before the striker lost his composure on the rebound and sent it over the stand behind the goal.

MJ Monaghan replaced Goulding at the beginning of the second half with the former Accrington Stanley man suffering from a knock.

Campbell had the first noteworthy strike of the second half, sending a 20-yard effort over the crossbar on 55 minutes.

Albion had a spell of dominance and chances around the hour-mark, with firstly Monaghan heading over before McKenna hit a stinging effort into the side netting.

Sambor forced a good saved from Kanuric and Wardle headed wide as Albion looked like extending their advantage to make for a more comfortable final few minutes.

The final 20 minutes or so saw Grantham put the Witton defence under more pressure as they went in search of an equaliser.

They were putting plenty of crosses into the box but only had a header wide of the target to show for it.

At the other end, on the counter attack, McKenna twisted and turned before curling a left-footed shot inches wide of the post.

Monaghan broke away down the left and forced another good save from Kanuric while Renshaw at the other end produced an acrobatic stop to keep out a Westcarr header.

The home victory was finally sealed in the second minute of added time and in some style.

Tom Owens picked up the ball on the left, 25 yards out and curled a delightful shot into the far corner to give Kanuric no chance.

The win takes Witton up a place into sixth in the BetVictor Northern Premier League, edging ever closer to the play-off berths.
