Billy Smart's 93rd minute equaliser gives Witton a share of the spoils

Witton Albion secured a point after a thrilling second half which saw six goals shared with FC United of Manchester at Wincham Park.

After a goalless first 45 minutes, the game lit up after the break and Billy Smart concluded the scoring with a 93rd minute equaliser to complete an Albion comeback.

It was a bright start from the hosts as they looked to begin the game on the front foot. Within the first three minutes, a ball forward found Will Jones through on goal but FC goalkeeper Cameron Belford came out and made a good save to deny the Witton frontman from scoring.

The visitors soon came back into things and Chris Renshaw was called upon to make a smart save to deny Paul Ennis' free kick.

Just before the half-hour mark, Albion had another good chance to break the deadlock. James Short burst down the left wing and sent a dangerous low cross into the penalty area. Jones had the first attempt on goal, his shot blocked with the rebound falling to MJ Monaghan who got underneath his effort as the ball flew over the bar.

The final noteworthy chance of the first half fell to United after good work down the left hand side, Short was on hand to block a goalbound effort and divert it out for a corner.

Both team made a chance during the interval. Tom Owens replaced Monaghan for the Albion while United brought on Alex Curran in place of Ennis.

It was the visitors who made the breakthrough with their first goal on 50 minutes.

Regan Linney made a marauding run down the left and his low cross was smashed into the back of the net by skipper Mike Potts from 10 yards.

Eight minutes later, FC doubled their advantage direct from a free kick on the right. Left-footed, Adam Dodd curled a dangerous ball into the far post which Chris Renshaw was unable to keep out.

It was close to a three-goal advantage just after the hour, but Chris Doyle's header went inches wide of the target as United looked well on top.

Striker Kyle Sambor was introduced from the Albion substitutes' bench to replace Short, and the tide began to turn in Witton's favour somewhat following his introduction.

He scored his first goal in red and white on 69 minutes, with a cool finish from 12 yards to halve the deficit.

Jones tried his luck from a free kick soon after, sending a piledriver towards goal but hitting the top of the wall and bouncing over the top.

Jones and Sambor combined well and the former laid the ball into the path of the latter on 78 minutes only for Sambor's effort to drift agonisingly wide from a tight angle.

Sambor would get his second goal, though, as he showed great strength to hold off his marker, twisting and turning to make enough space for himself to get a shot away which beat Belford for 2-2.

FC thought they had won it with two minutes of normal time remaining. Dodd netted his second with a powerful shot from the left side of the penalty area which beat Renshaw via a wicked deflection on its way to goal.

But the drama had not concluded just yet, as three minutes into injury time, Albion mustered another equaliser. The ball was worked nicely to the right side of the penalty area and Billy Smart struck a sweet shot which flew across the face of the goal and into the bottom corner.

And there ended an enthralling game with both teams picking up a point. Witton move on to next Saturday and another home fixture in the BetVictor Northern Premier League against Scarborough Athletic, kick-off 3:00pm.
