Albion fall to another home defeat

Witton Albion fell to a third consecutive home defeat as Lancaster City ran out 3-1 winners at Wincham Park.

Two quick-fire strikes by the visitors just before half time gave them the advantage, but despite Liam Goulding's goal early in the second half, City struck back quickly and completed a comfortable win.

It was the home team who begun the encounter brightly and looked a threat, particularly from set plays.

Adam Anson was the first to test City goalkeeper Sam Ashton with a back post header following a Danny McKenna corner from the left on 12 minutes.

Soon after, Ashton was called into action once more as he kept out a curling effort from recent addition MJ Monaghan.

James Murray was the next Witton player to attempt to make the breakthrough, cutting in from the left but seeing his shot deflected away for a corner as Albion dominated the opening 20 minutes of proceedings.

The visitors came into the game as the half grew, and Robert Wilson headed over the top from eight yards just after the half-hour mark.

The Lancaster number eight made amends on 42 minutes to put City ahead, as he raced on to a ball forward and slid the ball past Chris Renshaw and into the bottom corner of the net.

On the stroke of half time, it was 2-0. A cross from the right was only half cleared and Charlie Bailey dragged a shot which bobbled its way into the far corner.

The home side gave themselves hope of a comeback three minutes after the restart.

Good play down the right saw the ball cut back neatly for Goulding who caressed a delightful left footed shot into the top corner from 20 yards.

But Lancaster's two-goal advantage was soon restored as Renshaw palmed Paul Dawson's shot back out to Rowan Roache who had the simple task of side-footing home from 12 yards.

The visitors had further efforts on goal as they looked to put the game beyond doubt, David Norris hitting a goalbound shot which Jack Byrne deflected wide before the former Portsmouth man headed goalwards only for Renshaw to deny him at his near post.

Lancaster were reduced to 10 men when midfielder Niall Cowperthwaite was given a second yellow card having been booked in the first half.

But Albion couldn't make their man advantage count in the remaining minutes and slipped to their third home defeat in seven days.
