CARL Macauley has been at pains to insist he would not get carried away after Witton Albion collected maximum points over the Bank Holiday weekend.
This defeat, deserved but without highlighting deficiencies to worry too much about, served as a reminder as to why. Bamber Bridge will have protected an advantage established during eight first-half minutes more comfortably than he perhaps would have liked.
And yet Albion had chances to reopen the contest. They didn’t take any, and there was always a sense that Brig had them at arm’s length even after ceding the initiative.
It will niggle Witton that they might have edged in front when Rob Hopley met Danny McKenna’s back-post cross with a header that dropped narrowly wide.
A minute later, the visitors fell behind. Ryan White’s pass inside full-back James Yates was incisive, and Danny Forbes’ low cross was steered into the net by Matthew Dudley.
A second goal followed on 19 minutes when Alistair Waddecar, alert and aggressive, sprinted to charge down goalkeeper Greg Hall’s kick clear after he received a back-pass. The ball dropped kindly, and he lifted the cutest of finishes over Witton’s number one and into the net.
White ought to have done better when Cesaire Lingouba diverted a cross straight to him on the edge of the penalty area, but he shot weakly and Hall was untroubled.
Macauley responded by swapping McKenna and James Foley, and it brought a dividend.
The latter was more visible, and he cushioned a pass into Will Jones’ path when McKenna’s deep corner fell his way. A defender blocked the front man’s first attempt and his second, poked with his toe, squirmed through the legs of goalkeeper Lloyd Rigby before a back-marker hacked it to safety.
Foley’s glorious pass dissected the home team’s defence shortly afterwards but Matt Lawlor recovered to deny Hopley in shooting stride.
When the former Marine man tried his luck from 25 yards in the moments before the break, his dipping drive clattered against the crossbar.
Sometimes you need fortune to favour you.
Albion started the second-half with purpose, and another McKenna centre was redirected across the face of goal by Foley with his head. With Hopley waiting to pounce, Lawlor stretched fully to hook the ball away from underneath the crossbar.
Witton seemed discouraged, and Macauley responded by sending on Anthony Gardner and Delial Brewster.
The visitors dominated possession, but rarely had Brig worried.
McKenna was wasteful from two free-kicks in a promising position, while Matty Devine dragged a low attempt across the face of goal.
At the other end, Paul Dawson’s shot flashed wide after he had slalomed past two attempts to stop him.
Foley had one final glimpse of goal with three minutes left, but Rigby reacted smartly to parry.
Hope extinguished, Witton will seek to rediscover lost momentum when they host Marine on Tuesday.
