Billy's oh so Smart!

Albion swept aside their hosts with consummate ease, in fact Greg Hall wasn’t really tested throughout whereas his counterpart Lewis Exall produced a couple of top drawer saves to keep his team from an even heavier defeat.

With not much going right this season, following their relegation, the team in green could have been behind inside 5 minutes. A delightful build-up involving Danny McKenna, Rob Hopley, Will Jones and Billy Smart presented James Foley with a clear chance only for him to sky the ball into the adjacent allotments.

Foley’s next contribution saw his free-kick from just outside the area blocked, the ball ricocheting to Josh Wardle whose powerful shot was pushed over the bar by Exall.

Foley though saw third time lucky when converting a 16th minute penalty after Matty Devine had been fouled by Ben Leyland close to the by-line.

Ten minutes later it was 2-0, McKenna and Jones again linking well and providing Billy Smart the opportunity to choose his spot, curling the ball past Exall’s outstretched left hand, to record his debut goal in an Albion shirt.

The afternoon got even better shortly afterwards following an absolute piece of magic football skill by McKenna who totally bamboozled his marker laying the ball to Smart who in turn found Hopley with the skipper heading the ball on to Foley to fire in Albion’s third goal.

Three minutes before the break Exall was equal to Smart’s pile driver to keep the score down.

One blot on the proceedings saw Cesaire Lingouba be withdrawn at half-time having suffered what appeared to be a hamstring pull, in Chris Noone though Witton sent on an able deputy.

The 57th minute saw Albion seal the three points when James Yates and McKenna combined on the right, the latter’s cross falling perfectly for Smart to provide the deftest of headers that beat Exall low down at the far left post.

On 72 minutes substitute Delial Brewster brilliantly found himself acres of space, just over the half-way line, to advance but seemed to be caught out by the options available to him as Exall came out the result seeing him get the ball past the keeper but also wide of the left upright.

Six minutes later Jones had the ball in the back of the net when heading on from a Foley free-kick, his joy, along with the Wittoners present, when the linesman flag was raised although he looked to be on-side when the kick was taken!

The final attempt on goal came eight minutes from time when McKenna then saw his free-kick drift over the top right corner.

All in all then a very satisfactory performance to round off the month and the perfect preparation for the two mighty games coming up next week.
