Interview with Witton's number one

Witton Albion goalkeeper Chris Renshaw says he is thoroughly enjoying his football at Wincham Park.

The shot-stopper signed for The Albion last summer after leaving Premier League giants Everton, and has impressed in his first full season of first team football with a number of key saves throughout 2019-20.

Renshaw says the tight bond between the group has made his first campaign in manager Carl Macauley's side an enjoyable experience.

He said: "I love it here at Witton. We've got a good set of lads here and everyone's close knit both on and off the pitch, which is important.

"The season so far has been good. I'm quite critical of myself, so I'll always look to improve, but I feel I have done well up to now."

The 22-year-old looks back on a few highlights from the season to date, which is currently suspended due to the COVID-19 virus outbreak, with a couple of matches standing out in particular in his memory.

"My favourite moment of the season has got to be the FC United game at home," says Renshaw.

"We equalised late on (2-2) but they then got another goal just after. It went in via a deflection, so that was a real killer.

"I thought we were beaten, but then to go down the other end and score again was unbelievable!

"The away game at South Shields is up there too for the late comeback from 1-0 down to win 2-1. They're games I look back on and smile."

Renshaw has developed the very handy knack of saving penalties in recent games, with spot kick saves against both Morpeth Town and 1874 Northwich.

When asked if there was any secret to his success, the goalkeeper revealed: "I will stay behind some days after training and have a few lads take penalties at me.

"But it's hard to replicate what actually happens in a game.

"I do like to watch penalties on TV and guess beforehand where the taker will put it just from the run up style."
